Improve school chrome book access for high school students

The Issue

Growing up with two younger brothers who attend the same school district as I do, I've observed firsthand the annoyingly obvious differences in Chromebook access between them and myself. They're in Bannon creek, and they surprisingly have more freedom and accessibility on their computers. Meanwhile, I, a high school student, find myself restricted from utilizing these educational tools to their full potential. This discrepancy in access not only hinders my ability to learn and grow but also puts me at a disadvantage compared to my younger siblings.

In our rapidly advancing digital age, technology is a pivotal part of education. Chromebooks, as provided by schools, serve as essential resources to foster information access, interactive learning, and skill development among students. Therefore, limiting access for high school students contradicts the very reason these tools are introduced in the first place.

It's unfair that middle school students have better access than those who are older and need technology even more to prepare for college and professional life. High school is a critical time where students begin to define their career paths, engage in advanced study projects, and apply for colleges. By restricting high school students from full access to Chromebooks, the school hinders their educational experience and limits their opportunities to develop crucial skills that are necessary for their future studies and careers.

  1. Statistics indicate that students who have greater access to learning technology perform better academically and are more likely to pursue further education. According to a report by the National Center for Education Statistics, schools that implement comprehensive tech programs demonstrate higher student engagement and achievement.

    Potential solutions could include:
    1. Reviewing the current access policies to ensure equal and ample access to digital resources for all students.
    2. Implementing differentiated access based on educational needs, with high school students granted expanded permissions to use Chromebooks effectively.
    3. Encouraging student input in the development and adjustment of Chromebook use policies to better reflect their learning needs and allow students to access their personal Google account on school Chromebooks.

I urge the school district to recognize the importance of equitable computing access for all students, especially those in high school who are laying the groundwork for their futures. Let us bridge this gap and offer high school students the same digital privileges that are extended to their younger counterparts. Please sign this petition to support equal Chromebook access for high school students and help eliminate this educational inconsistency.
