Improve Safety on State Road 16/600N in Huntington County, Indiana

The Issue

Neighbors and I are concerned about the safety of other drivers on State Road 16/600N in Huntington County, especially around the S-Curves about one half mile from State Road 5.  Recently INDOT placed a Speed Limit 55 MPH sign as soon as drivers turn west onto SR16, in less than one half mile there are S-Curves that are marked at 30 mph.

We know that in recent years there have been a couple accidents and tragic deaths around these curves - this petition is NOT because of those, it is based on watching vehicles navigate purposely on the wrong side of the road so they don't have to slow down.

My own personal experiences after living on the other side of these curves for the last 10 years... one occasion, a driver, who was on the wrong side of the road, as I was driving the opposite direction, swerved, lost control and spun out into a homeowner's lawn hitting their fence (which is still damaged). The car came very close to hitting my vehicle, thankfully I was able to stop before that happened. It’s common to have to stop in the road and wait for a semi-truck to clear the curve before continuing since trailer is across the center line.

These curves are sharp and narrow which makes it difficult for drivers to stay within their lane. The situation is further complicated by large trucks that frequently use this road - while their tractors remain in their lanes, their trailers often cross into the center lane.

We are going to be placing cameras to prove this to anyone that is interested.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), rural roads like these account for approximately 40% of all vehicle fatalities due to factors such as sharp turns and inadequate signage. This is not just an inconvenience; it's a matter of life or death.

We need our local government officials to take action now. We urge them to review this section of road with traffic engineers for potential safety improvements such as widening lanes or installing better signage. This will not only improve safety but also reduce stress for those who travel this route regularly.

Please sign this petition if you agree that we need safer roads in Huntington County – your support could save lives.
