My son and I frequently walk along Holt Street in the Brock area of Kamloops, and every day, I am deeply concerned about our safety. The street lacks sidewalks, forcing us to share the road with vehicles, and with speeding being a persistent issue, this creates a hazardous environment for pedestrians. This concern is heightened by the presence of two schools on Holt Street, where children regularly walk to and from school.

Data from the Kamloops municipal government indicates a rise in pedestrian-related accidents over the past few years. The lack of basic pedestrian infrastructure like sidewalks not only endangers residents but also discourages walking as a healthy mode of transportation. Statistics from similar communities show that installing sidewalks can reduce pedestrian accidents by up to 65%. Furthermore, implementing speed mitigation measures such as speed bumps and clearer signage could significantly decrease the likelihood of speeding incidents. 

Our neighborhood deserves safe walking conditions for everyone. Adding sidewalks would secure a designated space for pedestrians, and addressing speeding through thoughtful urban planning would contribute to an overall safer community. Other cities that have faced similar issues have successfully managed to improve pedestrian safety by making such pivotal changes, and it's time for Kamloops to take action.
