Improve Safety of Kensington Public School Drop-off Zone

The issue

Who We Are

We are members of the Parents and Citizens (P&C) Association for Kensington Public School—a dedicated group of parents aiming to create a healthy, positive, and safe school environment for our children.

The Issue

The Randwick City Council and Transport for NSW have added a dedicated cycling lane to Doncaster Avenue in Kensington, NSW. However, the new arrangement of traffic lanes in front of Kensington Public School (KPS) is unsafe, and it is only a matter of time before an accident occurs during morning drop-off times.

The Problems

  • Narrow Traffic Lanes: The lanes are narrower than industry standards by 40 to 80 cm. This makes it unsafe to open a car door when cars are passing by.
  • Bike Lane: While we support active transportation, the bike lane has compromised the space needed for safe vehicle movement.
  • Car Parking: The new design has prioritized maintaining parking availability over the safety of our children and parents.
  • Right Turn Lane: The dedicated right-turn lane into Todman Ave further cramps a tight space.
  • Trees Over Safety: The decision to preserve the small nature strip in front of the school has put the safety of parents and children at risk.

We appreciate that narrower lanes can slow down traffic, but risking human lives to achieve this is unacceptable.

Our Request

We urge Randwick Council to immediately review and revise the current traffic lane arrangements on Doncaster Avenue, prioritizing the safety of children and parents. We look forward to proactive steps being taken to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.
