The Issue

We, the undersigned residents and concerned community members of Montville, New Jersey, respectfully submit this petition requesting the implementation of pedestrian safety measures on Vista Road, specifically in the area between the softball field and the entrance to Lake Valhalla.

This stretch of Vista Road sees a substantial increase in pedestrian traffic during the warmer months, particularly among children and families walking to and from recreational facilities and the lake. Despite its residential nature, this road is frequently used by drivers who exceed safe speed limits, creating a growing safety concern for pedestrians.

We are formally requesting the installation of temporary speed bumps during high foot-traffic months (May through September) to slow down vehicles and protect those on foot. We also suggest consideration of permanent pedestrian safety signage—such as “State Law Requires Stop for Pedestrians” (see image below for examples), pedestrian crossing signs, or other visual traffic calming tools—as additional or alternative options to enhance awareness and improve safety in this specific area.

We want to emphasize that we are open to a range of solutions that the Township’s Traffic, Patrol, and Engineering departments may propose to increase pedestrian safety. The ultimate goal is to protect those who frequent this public space—especially the many young children who walk, bike, and play nearby.

This petition reflects our collective concern and our desire to work collaboratively with the township to create a safer environment for all.

We respectfully request that this proposal be reviewed and addressed in a timely manner. We are happy to support next steps, including attending community meetings, engaging in site visits, or coordinating with relevant departments.

Thank you for your consideration and commitment to public safety.
