We, the undersigned residents of Lott, Texas, and concerned citizens, urgently request immediate safety improvements to the intersection of US Highway 77 and TX 320.

This intersection poses a significant danger to drivers and pedestrians, resulting in frequent accidents and injuries, including the recent devastating injuries sustained by a 3-year-old girl. Immediate action is required to prevent further unnecessary injury and suffering.  Historically, the incidence of serious accident at this intersection far exceeds the average in Texas. 

Currently, the intersection has only a blinking warning light, a 45 mph speed limit, and stop signs on TX 320. These measures are clearly insufficient to prevent accidents based on accident data from TxDot. It is an extremely difficult intersection to navigate due to local terrain and blind spots. We implore the Texas Department of Transportation to conduct an immediate review of this intersection and implement some or all the following safety improvements:

• Reduced Speed Limits: Decrease the speed limit on all approaches to the intersection, especially  Hwy77 and Eastbound 320
• Early Reduced Speed Limits: Expand the area of the reduced speed limits too much further from the intersection.
• Traffic Signal: Install a fully functional traffic signal to regulate the flow of traffic.
• Enhanced Warning Lights: Install additional blinking warning lights and / or STOP AHEAD signage further away from the intersection in all directions. Especially on 77 southbound and 320 Eastbound.
• Consider a Reduced Conflict Intersection (RCI): Evaluate the feasibility of implementing an RCI design, which has been proven to significantly reduce crashes at intersections.
• Install Speed Bumps : Speed bumps on eastbound 320  and/or southbound 77 would further alert drivers to the upcoming dangerous intersection.
• Lighted  Stop Sign: a lighted or flashing stop sign on east bound 320 would further alert drivers to the danger. 

We urge the Texas Department of Transportation to take immediate action to address this dangerous intersection before there is more death and injury. The safety of our community, especially our children, depends on it. We cannot afford to wait for another tragedy to occur before taking action.
