Improve Safety and Restore Richmond Greenway

Improve Safety and Restore Richmond Greenway
The Issue
As residents directly affected by the conditions of the Richmond Greenway, our seven neighborhood corridors are continually plagued by an unpleasant atmosphere, waste dumping and crime due to lack of proper monitoring and safety checks.
Currently, no efficient lighting system is in place, leading to poor visibility, particularly at nights, which in turn, contributes to the crime rate in our area. According to the Richmond Police Department’s crime data, our corridors have seen a surge in petty crimes during after-dark hours in the past two years (Richmond Police Department).
Moreover, the lack of proper garbage and recycling bins lead to environmental degradation. Richmond Greenway, once known for its native plants, has become a dumping site for waste resulting in damage to its natural beauty and habitat. Studies indicate that areas with poor waste management attract crime and anti-social behaviors (Health Effects of Poor Waste Management, Richmond Council Environmental Health Department, 2018).
Our plight for a cleaner, safer and well-lit environment has led us to petition that the park and recreation be managed by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department including waste management plan, Appropriate lighting and native plant restoration. We also call for the Cameras to be overseen by the Richmond Police Department. Just as the city has mitigated issues in other regions, we believe Richmond Greenway deserves the same attention and proactive action.
It’s time to make a concerted effort to restore the environmental aesthetics, safety and public welfare of our treasured corridor. For a safer, cleaner, and restored Richmond Greenway, we need your signature. Sign, and support the cause for a secure and revitalized Richmond community
