Improve Road Safety - Hopgrove, York A1036 Malton Road
The Issue
The Hopgrove community consists of residents, businesses, and sports facilities that are used by children and adults from in and outside of the area. The A1036 Malton Road is a major route in and out of York servicing the town centre, Vangarde & Monks Cross Shopping Parks and more recently the LNER Community Stadium, bringing with it a vast increase in traffic.
Concerns have been raised numerous times to City of York Council and North Yorkshire Police over the past several years, following a spate of road traffic accidents. One local male even required intensive hospital care having been knocked off his bike and sustained a head injury, while at the time working at the Toby Carvery.
Traffic flows dangerously fast, yet NYP responded when contacted, to say that they don’t believe there is a problem - however they concentrate their frequent speed van patrols on Hopgrove Lane South, completely disregarding the speeding traffic on A1036!
The junction of Hopgrove Lane South and Hopgrove Lane North are virtually opposite one another and encounter regular RTC’s often blocking the main A1036 Malton Road. Pedestrians regularly walk along this road to the Holiday Inn - jumping on and off the grass verges with suitcases, in the dark! Children cycle to the sports facilities. Local residents cycle to and from work, in and out of the area.
Vehicles turning onto the A1036 from these locations, including Toby Carvery, Holiday Inn and Hopgrove Playing Fields Association are dangerously doing so on a daily basis. I have previously been in touch with COYC who even suggested always turning left, to avoid crossing the direction of traffic! This is not a sustainable solution!
We are imminently to see major works carried out to the ‘Little Hopgrove Roundabout’ as part of Highways England’s improvements to the A64 and major works to the A1237 to dual the outer ring road (Planning Application 22/02020/FULM). The impact of this for residents is not just the inconvenience while the works take place, but the repercussions of this will be traffic flowing even faster in and around the vicinity.
Junction improvements are desperately required at Hopgrove Lane end and a suitable safe, lit, footpath incorporating a cycle path needs to be put in place for the entire A1036, allowing pedestrians and cyclists to use the road safely and link up with the path already in place at Vangarde. We are supposed to be a cycling City, yet we do not currently feel included!
When discussing this with a local parish councillor they suggested starting a petition, where everyone who is impacted can voice their concerns and together we can aim to make the area safe and accessible.
Enough is enough, we can do nothing and wait for someone to be killed, or we can pull together and make these minor improvements, a major success!
