The Issue

I am writing as a concerned parent with an adult autistic son who diligently goes to work despite his unique challenges. His resilience is his strength, but the lack of pedestrian-friendly infrastructure severely limits his independence and safety. This situation is not just a mere inconvenience - it presents real danger.

In the United States, in 2019, 6,205 pedestrians died in traffic crashes, the highest number in 30 years, according to a report from the Governors Highway Safety Association.

In the state of Louisiana pedestrian deaths have increased by 9 fatalities each year over a 10 year period. In 2023 there were 147 pedestrian fatalities in our state.

It only reinforces the dire need for essential infrastructures like sidewalks and crosswalks to make public areas safer for pedestrians, like my son.

Though he can't drive, like many who depend on public transport, he has every right to safe and convenient access. Installations of crosswalks and sidewalks are not just about comfort, they are pivotal to the safety and welfare of individuals. We must ensure our towns and cities are safe and accessible to everyone regardless of their abilities and commute method.

By signing this petition, you’ll be taking a step towards making our community a better place, where safety and accessibility are not just an afterthought but integrated into our urban development. Please sign this petition to urge our local authorities to install crosswalks and sidewalks to make public transportation easily and safely accessible.
