Improve Pedestrian Safety Crossings on Market Street, Balranald, NSW Urgently

The issue

To The Honourable Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of New South Wales.  This Petition of the people of Balranald & District, New South Wales, brings to the attention of the House:

Current traffic arrangements put pedestrians at continual risk on Market St, Balranald, NSW which resulted on 13/12/2023 in the tragic death of 7 year old William Stanley Ellis, trying to cross this road on his way home from school. After this tragedy a “high pedestrian activity area” sign was erected on both sides of the shopping precinct which may make a driver aware but does nothing for pedestrians trying to cross Market St at their own peril. We urgently need designated school crossings or Zebra Pedestrian crossings or traffic lights and or reduction of speed limit to 40 klms with flashing lights, to ensure the safety of our public trying to cross the street. The Balranald P12, St Josephs School and Balranald Early Learning Centre are all on one side of the street, while The Balranald Library, which runs “After School care” programs, Senior Citizens rooms and Bidgee Haven Retirement Hostel are all on the opposite side of Market Street. People in wheelchairs or gophers are compromised daily when trying to cross this busy street, while children, parents and carers are continually putting their lives at risk crossing this extremely busy road at least twice a day.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to urgently provide safe and designated Pedestrian zebra crossings or school crossing or traffic lights and or reduction in speed limit to 40 with flashing lights, at both the intersections of Market St and Myall St and Market St and We St, Balranald.

The undersigned petitioners therefore ask the Legislative Assembly to urgently provide safe and designated Pedestrian zebra crossings or school crossing or traffic lights or reduce speed limit to 40 with flashing lights, at both the intersections of Market St and Myall St and Market St and We St, Balranald.
