What we want:

  • Crosswalks across 36th St and Stone Way N to provide a safe way for people to cross both streets
  • Daylighting around crosswalks to shorten crossing distance, and increase visibility of pedestrians Daylighting Example

Intersection Improvements

Why we want it:

Local businesses and neighbors agree: busy car traffic on a 3-lane road (Stone Way) and a lack of safe pedestrian crossings creates a dangerous barrier between people and where they want to go to shop, workout, and go to school in this busy pedestrian area. This intersection has already been the site of many close calls and unsafe situations (a cyclist was even hit by a car on December 12, 2023).

Stone Way N separates two busy pedestrian neighborhoods (Fremont and Wallingford) with limited pedestrian and cyclist crossings. Pedestrian traffic has been quickly increasing with the opening of Figurehead Brewing and Stone Way Café, and will only continue to increase as the new Brooks headquarters with over 600 employees opens up.

"Stone Way N is changing rapidly.  Over the past 8 years, we've watched families with children, senior citizens, cyclists, and others navigate Stone Way with no clear, safe way to cross.  Motorists and truck drivers consistently fail to see or stop for pedestrians waiting at the cutouts or mid-way through the intersection.  With retail business increasing around 36th and Stone,  the risk of an accident grows.  A clear crosswalk would help keep our customers, our employees, and our neighbors safe." - Jesse Schumann, Sea Wolf Bakers Owner

"We have seen Stone Way change over the years and agree it is very important to have a crosswalk added for the safety of the community. Pedestrians currently have a false sense of security likely because of the current closure on 34th/35th and traffic being lighter. We have many families walking and biking to our childcare center and preschool on Interlake & 36th street, and the city has a responsibility to ensure they can continue to do so safely." - Tara Katz, Director of Education at Fremont Community School

"As a community hub located at the intersection of Stone Way N. and 36th Street, we at Stoneway Café have witnessed firsthand the increasing danger that pedestrians face when crossing this busy intersection. With the growth of our local population and the accompanying rise in traffic, it has become clear that a 4-way pedestrian crosswalk is a necessary safety measure. This intersection serves as a vital point for residents, visitors, and local businesses alike, and without proper pedestrian infrastructure, the risk of accidents continues to rise. We urge the city to prioritize the safety of all road users and implement a 4-way crosswalk to ensure that pedestrians can navigate this area securely and confidently." - Dustin Cramer, Owner Stone Way Cafe

"Stone Way N is such a pivotal part of the Wallingford neighborhood. It is vibrant and full of families that are often biking or walking to their destinations. Tara's Tots is part of a beautiful school community located on Interlake and 36th, making Stone Way a busy hub for families attending our schools. With the traffic flow increasing, safety is a huge concern for all of us. A four way crosswalk across Stone Way and N 36th is imperative for the safety of our community and families." - Adriana Lazu, Administrator, Tara's Tots Inc.

Improving pedestrian access would encourage more people to walk through this intersection confidently to get to where they need to go, enabling them to enjoy the attractions in this area.
