Improve Pedestrian Safety at Chaddlewood Roundabout, Plympton, Plymouth
The Issue
As a regular user of the Chaddlewood Roundabout in Plympton, Plymouth - by both car and foot - I have noticed a worrying increase in the volume of traffic and speed. This is not just an observation from afar; it's a personal concern that affects my daily life. My young daughter often accompanies me on these journeys, either holding my hand or sitting in her pram. It has become increasingly difficult and dangerous to cross this roundabout, particularly at Holland Road.
The crossing from Glen Road (outside the Chaddlewood Pub) to Steer Park Road and from Steer Park Road to Holland Road is especially perilous. The current situation is such that I am constantly on edge about potential accidents due to insufficient safety measures. The location of the current crossing means that you essentially have your back to oncoming traffic and I really believe it is an accident waiting to happen.
A subway is located further down Glen Road but this does not reduce the risk to those who need to cross at Holland Road to access the industrial park or other workplaces as well as crossing to the Co-op which is the nearest shop for those working/living near to the roundabout.
This isn't just about me or my family; it's about all pedestrians who use this roundabout. According to data from the Department for Transport (DfT), there were 25,945 pedestrian casualties in reported road traffic accidents across Great Britain in 2019 alone. We must act now before our local area becomes part of these statistics.
I understand that a footbridge cannot be installed due to the need for machinery and vehicular access to the Langage Industrial site (such as boat moves) but I call upon our local council and transport authorities to take immediate action towards improving pedestrian safety at the Chaddlewood Roundabout – including but not limited to implementing better signage, improved lighting, pedestrian-controlled traffic lights or zebra crossings (a campaign currently being supported by Active Travel England).
Our community deserves safe roads for everyone – drivers and pedestrians alike. Please sign this petition if you agree that urgent improvements need to be made for safer crossings at Chaddlewood Roundabout.
