We, the parents, students and concerned citizens of Apex High School, urge the Wake County School System, the Town and Apex, and the NC Department of Transportation to work together to significantly improve the safety of students crossing Laura Duncan Road. (Please no finger pointing - there are lives at stake here.)

With the recent vehicle-pedestrian crash, it is obvious that the traffic patterns are not safe for all students. With several hundred students crossing Laura Duncan at Knollwood Drive every morning, improvements that could be introduced include:

Crosswalk personnel on staff in the morning. (long-term - not just the first week)

A HAWK (High-Intensity Activated crossWalK) signal, also known as a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, installed at the crosswalk.

Police officer directing traffic at the carpool line with improved movement in this line.

A tardy policy that considers traffic on Laura Duncan Road to reduce panic on the streets.

Buses scheduled to minimize long rides that 'force' a parental drop-off.

Improve crosswalk ramp at Knollwood Road to prevent students being forced to leave the crosswalk. Make this ADA compliant.
