The Issue
The recent changes at Southwest High School have negatively impacted students and staff, creating an atmosphere that is far from the one we all cherished and made 'the place to be'. My experience alongside my fellow students has drastically worsened, with many of us feeling unheard and undervalued due to the alterations in our school's schedule, particularly regarding advisory and lunch periods. It is clear that the new lunch schedule, intended to encourage socialization, has instead led to dissatisfaction and discomfort among students.
These changes were supposed to enhance our experience, allowing us more opportunities to connect, learn, and grow together. Instead, they have fragmented our daily routines and failed to consider the foundational needs of the student body. The advisory period, once a time for focused attention and support, has been altered significantly, leaving students without the guidance they relied on.
Moreover, Fort Worth Independent School District (FWISD) claims that there are zero teacher vacancies, yet classroom overcrowding tells another story. Many classrooms are overfilled with 20+ students who face a learning environment that is not conducive to their academic success. This situation underscores the disconnect between reported statistics and the daily reality of our school.
Southwest High School deserves better. Our students deserve to learn in a comfortable and efficient environment that truly supports their educational endeavors and mental well-being. To address these issues, we propose a careful reevaluation of the current schedule to better meet student needs, restore effective advisory sessions, and optimize lunch periods for genuine social interaction.
We call on FWISD administrators to recognize and address these concerns seriously. It is essential to reassess classroom allocations and provide adequate resources to ensure that each student receives the quality education they deserve without unnecessary stress or overcrowding.
