Autistic individuals frequently struggle within the criminal justice system due to a lack of understanding and suitable resources catered to their needs. In Michigan, encounters with the legal system can be particularly challenging for those with autism, due to the state's limited accommodations for neurodiverse individuals. Instead, the system tends to treat autistic individuals much like neurotypical ones, often leading to injustices and unfair treatment (National Autistic Society). Autism, a neurological and developmental disorder, affects an estimated 1 in 54 American children (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). In order to address these issues, there needs to be a reformation of Michigan's criminal justice system that specifically cater to the unique challenges that autistic individuals face. This can be achieved through training law enforcement and legal professionals to better understand autism, adapting communication methods, and ensuring proper legal representation for accused individuals on the spectrum.
