Every day, I see students in my community struggle silently with mental health issues. As a teacher in an urban high school, I've witnessed firsthand the enormous burden that anxiety, depression, and other mental health disorders place on young people. It breaks my heart to watch talented and promising students fall behind simply because they lack the proper support and resources.

Unfortunately, my school, like many others across the country, does not have adequate mental health resources to support these students effectively. We have one counselor for nearly 500 students, meaning most of them never get the help they need. The stakes are high, and without prompt and effective mental health intervention, students risk underperformance academically, socially, and emotionally.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in six U.S. children aged 6-17 experiences a mental health disorder each year, yet only 50% of these children receive the necessary treatment. This gap in care is unacceptable and contributes to lifelong struggles for many young people.

To address this critical issue, I urge school boards and local governments to:

1. Increase funding for mental health services in schools, ensuring that every student has access to a qualified counselor or therapist.
2. Integrate mental health education into the curriculum to destigmatize mental health issues and encourage students to seek help when needed.
3. Provide ongoing training for teachers and school staff to recognize the signs of mental health issues and respond appropriately.

Our children's future depends on our ability to support them today.
