Improve mental health resources at Ohio University

Improve mental health resources at Ohio University
The Issue
Mental health is a growing concern for college students nationwide—and Ohio University is no exception.
Many students are facing increasing academic, social, and personal pressures that directly impact their well-being.
While Ohio University offers mental health services, many students struggle to access them in a way that feels timely, consistent, or supportive. Long wait times, unclear next steps, and limited availability can leave students feeling discouraged—especially when they’ve already taken the difficult step of reaching out for help.
This isn’t just a question of whether services exist. It’s about whether they are working in a way that students can realistically use.
We are calling for practical, student-centered improvements that make support more accessible and effective.
Better psychoeducational sessions would give students clearer guidance and tools to understand their mental health and how to manage it. This kind of support can help students build coping strategies, recognize patterns, and feel more informed throughout the process.
At the same time, implementing clear and collaborative treatment plans would ensure that students leave appointments knowing what comes next. Having that structure can create consistency, set expectations, and help students feel more confident in their care.
Research consistently shows that stronger mental health support leads to better academic outcomes, improved retention, and a more connected campus community. Investing in these resources is not just beneficial—it is necessary.
Ohio University has the opportunity to take meaningful steps toward improving student well-being. We urge university leadership to prioritize these changes and create a system that truly supports students when they need it most.
