Improve Mental Health Resources at Georgia Tech. Remove the Stigma of Seeking Help!

The Issue

Georgia Tech is best known for its rigorous courses, taking pride in the difficulty of its academics and the prestige of its graduates. However, because of this rigor, combined with managing social and professional lives, a great deal of stress is placed on students here. This is especially apparent among student-athletes who have to manage both their student and athletic lives simultaneously. Georgia Tech has mental health resources, but many students either do not use them because they have been dissatisfied, have trouble getting in contact with counselors, or are not comfortable with reaching out. This leads to students feeling isolated and alone, having to bear their troubles all on their own.

Students will continue to feel this way if nothing changes. At a school that places so much pressure on its students, providing tailored mental health resources is paramount. We need to be the ones to initiate change. We need to work together to initiate more conversations with staff so we can find where the disconnect is, and implement programs that fill the gaps students feel day-to-day. If enough of us get behind this, we can change our campus for the better.
