The Issue

Besides learning, a University should provide a nurturing environment helpful to the overall growth of its students. As a student of the University of North Georgia, I have not only experienced the mental toll but have also seen my peers struggle with mental health issues, leading to tragic circumstances including the loss of at least two fellow students to suicide. These losses are not mere statistics; they represent the intense pain and struggle our fellow students are contending with. Mental health resources do exist, but they are limited and far from efficient in managing the scale of the problem.

Suicide is the #2 leading cause of death for college students
Approximately 1,100 suicides on college campuses per year
25% know of someone who has died as a result of suicide
40% know of someone who has attempted
0.6% of those 18 years and older attempted suicide. 7.5% of those 18-25 seriously considered suicide (American Foundation of Suicide Prevention, 2013)

An increase in life-altering or tragic events reveals a clear and pressing need for enhanced mental health services and an overall more supportive atmosphere for struggling students. A recent study by the National Alliance on Mental Illness, found that one in five students face mental health issues. While the university does send mental health resources, they do not meaningfully tackle the roots of the problem and fail to create an atmosphere in which we feel truly welcome.

The President needs to address this staggering issue at the University, knowing and understanding that both students and faculty are tired of seeing names go up on the memorial wall.

This petition seeks a substantial increase in available mental health services and resources on campus and the creation of a more compassionate, understanding, and inclusive learning environment for all students. We don't need another email for resources; we need a thorough overhaul of the existing system that recognizes and values our well-being. By signing this petition, you are calling upon the University of North Georgia administrators to take prompt action in addressing mental health concerns and providing sufficient resources. Sign to save lives and make our college experience less draining and more uplifting.
