Improve Mental Health Education in Brookline Public Schools

The Issue

I am someone struggling with mental health, and for my whole life (even after being diagnosed) they have called my depression "sadness," taking away the meaning and importance of my issues. They are doing more harm than help, most of the kids in my school afraid to talk to guidance counslers about their issues because they know it will only make it worse. This is why it is crucial for Brookline public schools to provide better Mental Health Education in grades K-8.

Mental health education can help children understand their emotions, reduce stigma, and encourage those who need help to seek it early. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, 1 in 5 children ages 13-18 have or will have a serious mental illness. Early education can make a significant difference. We need to get teachers better education if they are going into the field of children's mental well being, and we need a better curriculum to make sure every student feels seen and not alone.
