Improve Mail Delivery Services for Senior Citizens and Residents

kathi mooreDayton, TX, United States
Created January 28, 2024

The Issue

Our senior citizens and residents are being denied the basic right to home mail delivery. This is not just an inconvenience, but a significant barrier for those who are unable to travel due to age, disability or health issues. It's personal because it affects our loved ones – our parents, grandparents, neighbors who have contributed so much to our society.

In 2019 alone, over 49 million Americans were aged 65 or older (source: U.S Census Bureau). Many of these individuals rely heavily on mail services for receiving essential items such as medications, bills and letters from loved ones. The lack of reliable home mail delivery service is therefore not just an issue of convenience but one that directly impacts their quality of life.

Our only options for mail delivery are to pay for a postal box or put up a mailbox on a busy street with no shoulder or sidewalk. These options are either expensive or dangerous.

The attached letter is a response from the Postal Service to my request to Senator Cornyn for help. As the current chaos in the Houston area proves the Postal Service has a problem with communication. Ms. Mackey spoke to me one time for approximately 3 minutes on November 21, 2022. Her only response was "those streets will never have home mail delivery". That was her explanation. I was refused contact information for her supervisor. She responded only after I contracted the Office of the Consumer Advocate twice. I first contacted hotline@uspsoig.gov on July 11, 2022. They referred me to the USPS Consumer and Industry office in Houston Texas. I contacted the office first by fax on July 26, 2022 then I left a voicemail which said I’d be contacted but no contact occurred. I again called on August 22, 2022, left a voicemail and still no response. I again contacted hotline@uspsoig.gov by email on September 6, 2022 and September 28, 2022, see attached, with no response from that office. I again reached out to Ms. Mackey January 26, 2023 a new subdivision one block over received home mail delivery at each home. She accused me of not being honest. The original mail delivery routes were created in the 1960's. E. Young Street east of Colbert was the only street that was skipped for mail delivery. E Young and Glass were also the only streets that were completely minority. The residents have asked for home mail delivery since the 1970's without any success although new homes have been built and received the service. The city of Dayton is growing and "delivery mode" is constantly changing.

We need your support in urging the relevant authorities to improve mail delivery services for senior citizens and residents regardless of the of the community. Please sign this petition today!
