Petition for Urgent Infrastructure and Public Safety Improvements in Navalur, Egattur, and Siruseri

To the concerned local authorities and infrastructure agencies, 

Navigating through Navalur, Egattur, and Siruseri has become an everyday struggle for commuters, residents, and workers alike. What was once a thriving hub of technology and commerce is now suffocating under neglected infrastructure, poor sanitation, and serious public safety concerns. We, the undersigned residents, employees, and daily commuters, urge immediate and sustained action to address the issues detailed below.

1. Deteriorating Roads and Service Lanes
The main roads are riddled with potholes that turn into hazardous traps during the monsoon season, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Poorly maintained roads are a well-documented contributor to road accidents, particularly in adverse weather, and this risk is only escalating here.

Compounding this, the service roads running alongside these stretches have deteriorated to the point of virtually disappearing in several sections. What should be a functional, safe lane for local access and slower-moving traffic is now unusable rubble in many areas, forcing pedestrians and two-wheelers onto the main carriageway and increasing accident risk for everyone.

2. Stray Cattle on the Roads
Cattle are frequently found standing or wandering in the middle of the road, seemingly unattended and without any visible ownership or containment. This is a serious and recurring hazard for vehicles, especially at night when visibility is already poor, and needs to be addressed through proper cattle control and impounding measures by the local municipal authority.

3. Loss of Street Lighting
Stretches of this route that were once well-lit are now dark, with non-functional or missing streetlights. Poor lighting after sunset makes the area unsafe for pedestrians, two-wheeler riders, and anyone commuting during early morning or late evening hours, and directly enables several of the other problems listed here.

4. Public Safety and Decency Concerns Near the Old Toll Gate Area
The area around the former toll gate has become a serious public safety concern after dark. Reports from commuters indicate this stretch is now being used for solicitation and other inappropriate activity at night, including overt gestures directed at passing vehicles and pedestrians — making it deeply uncomfortable and unsafe for women, children, and families to pass through. The poor lighting in this stretch makes the problem worse and harder to monitor.

Additionally, since the toll booth structure was decommissioned and removed, the restrooms attached to it — previously kept locked — now appear to be used for illegal and anti-social activities. An abandoned, unsecured, unlit structure of this kind should not be left as-is; it should either be properly sealed, demolished, or repurposed under municipal supervision, with regular police patrolling reinstated in this stretch, especially during night hours.

5. Garbage Dumping and Sanitation
Large-scale, unregulated garbage dumping is taking place along this corridor, turning the area into an eyesore and a public health hazard. This attracts stray dogs and vermin, adds to the general disorder of the area, and creates conditions that further encourage anti-social activity after dark. Regular waste collection, clear anti-dumping enforcement, and adequate signage/penalties are urgently needed.

6. Littering, Dust, and Debris
Both sides of the road are constantly covered in dust, mud, sand, plastic waste, and cattle dung, worsened by wind and the absence of regular street cleaning. This affects air quality, is unpleasant and unhygienic for pedestrians and commuters, and reflects a broader lack of civic upkeep in the area.

 
Our Ask

We request that the local authorities and infrastructure agencies take coordinated, time-bound action on the following:

Road repair — Immediate repair of potholed main roads and full restoration/reconstruction of the broken service roads.
Drainage — Implementation of proper drainage systems to prevent waterlogging and flooding during monsoons.
Street lighting — Urgent restoration of functional street lighting across all currently dark stretches.
Cattle control — Regular patrols and impounding of stray cattle found on the roads.
Public safety patrolling — Increased police presence and night patrolling near the old toll gate area to curb solicitation and anti-social activity, especially given the risk to women and children commuters.
Securing the abandoned toll booth structure — Sealing, demolishing, or repurposing the vacant toll booth and its attached restrooms to prevent misuse.
Waste management — Regular garbage collection, strict anti-dumping enforcement, and clean-up of existing dump sites.
Road-side cleaning — Periodic clearing of dust, mud, debris, and animal waste along both sides of the road.
These are achievable, practical measures that would transform Navalur, Egattur, and Siruseri into safer, cleaner, and more livable areas for everyone who lives, works, and commutes through them.
