The Issue
At Dickson High School, students are feeling overwhelmingly disconnected from their education and school environment. This sentiment is largely due to the leadership style of our principal, JeLana Aaron, whose approach seems misaligned with the educational and personal growth needs of the students. Many of us feel that the principal's leadership doesn't foster a constructive and enjoyable atmosphere for learning and personal development – it feels more like a series of burdens that detract from our academic focus and make us dread going to school.
As students who are committed to our education, we value a principal who is engaged, compassionate, and participative. We want leadership that listens to student concerns, supports us academically, and creates an environment where we are excited and motivated to learn. This is not only important for our academic achievements but also for our overall well-being and future success.
Research shows that positive school climates, led by involved and supportive leaders, significantly enhance student engagement and learning outcomes. According to a report from the National Association of Secondary School Principals, schools with effective and empathetic leadership see increased student attendance rates, higher levels of participation in extracurricular activities, and improved academic performance across the board.
We propose the formation of a student-led committee to regularly communicate with the principal and administration, conveying student feedback and fostering a collaborative approach to school improvement. Additionally, professional development for school leadership should be implemented, focusing on student psychology, empathetic communication, and modern leadership strategies.
Our goal is to create a better learning environment at Dickson High School that supports all students not just academically, but socially and emotionally. We believe that with these changes, our school can become a place where every student looks forward to being a part of the community.
We urge the community, parents, and school district officials to support our call for a change in leadership strategies at Dickson High School. Please sign this petition to help us improve our school experience and environment.
