As it should be, the civilized world has for years discussed a treaty outlawing the use of landmines in conflict areas; landmines cruelly continue to kill innocent civilians and children for years after the conflict has ended. Upon the recommendation of senior Pentagon officials, the U.S. has consistently refused to sign the treaty; yet, even if we do, it needs to be improved. Now 68 Senators and 56 Representatives have signed identical letters to President Obama to support a comprehensive review of U.S. policy on landmines. It is a matter of deep national honor and compassion that we quit stalling and sign this humane treaty. I urge the President to sign this treaty now and send it to the Senate for ratification; after improvements have been added.
