I am a local farmer from Marihatag, Surigao del Sur, Philippines. My livelihood and that of many others in our community is deeply connected to the rice fields we tend to day in and day out. Our lives are intertwined with the cycles of planting and harvesting. However, our yield has been significantly affected due to inadequate irrigation systems.

Rice cultivation is heavily dependent on water; it requires about 5,000 liters of water to produce one kilogram of rice (source: International Rice Research Institute). The current irrigation system in our paddy fields is insufficient for this requirement leading to subpar harvests. This not only affects our personal income but also impacts the overall food security within our region.

The lack of proper irrigation also hinders us from diversifying into other crops which could provide additional income during off-harvest seasons. By improving the irrigation system, we can increase crop diversity which will lead to better economic stability for farmers like me.

Therefore, we call upon the local government authorities and agricultural departments to invest in efficient and sustainable irrigation systems for paddy fields in Marihatag, Surigao del Sur. This investment will not only improve rice production but also allow us farmers to explore other cropping options thereby ensuring food security and economic stability within our community.
