Improve Google review transparency for small businesses

The Issue

I am writing to raise a growing concern regarding the the ease of writing fake negative reviews on Google and its impact on small, local businesses.

At present, individuals are able to leave negative reviews anonymously or under profiles that do not clearly identify who they are. This lack of accountability has led to an increase in misleading, false, or malicious reviews that can unfairly damage the reputation of businesses that rely heavily on their online presence for survival.

I propose that, in order to leave a negative review, user profiles should be required to display a verified full name and a clear photograph of the individual. This added layer of transparency would encourage more honest, responsible feedback and discourage misuse of the platform.
Small businesses, in particular, are vulnerable to the effects of unjust reviews.

Statistics reveal that a single negative review can drive away approximately 22% of potential customers, and this number increases significantly when there are multiple poor reviews. Negative reviews has impacted people finding my website over competitors, impacted customer perception, and ultimately affected my bottom line.

Additionally, we are seeing a rise in what is often referred to as “cancel culture,” where individuals feel empowered to post damaging comments without fully understanding or considering the real-world consequences for business owners. Behind every small business is a person or family whose income and wellbeing may be directly affected.

By implementing stronger verification measures for those leaving negative feedback, Google would help:
*Reduce the number of fake or malicious reviews
*Encourage fair and constructive criticism
*Protect small businesses from unjust reputational harm
*Promote accountability and transparency across the platform

This petition is not about silencing genuine feedback, but about ensuring that it is fair, accountable, and given responsibly.
I urge Google to review its current policies and consider introducing verification requirements for users who wish to leave negative reviews.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
