Although I can understand what Mr Peter Tapiolas has said in an email responce today.
The blame game is now starting as to who is at fault for the planned lights at the intersection not being started even though there was a known fault in 2017.
Email to John as follows.
John,
Many thanks for your email. We appreciate you reaching out to us in a sad time for many people with the recent death at the Weston Street intersection. I note TMR response claiming that the developer of Cosgrove is responsible for the upgrade of the intersection which is totally misleading. The current traffic movements on this intersection is well and truly higher than the parameters that this intersection is designed for and is considered by all standards significantly deficient. As such, TMR is accountable for this deficiency and not the developer of the adjacent land. Our development approval for the Cosgrove Estate requires us to upgrade this intersection, if and when we increase traffic exiting Weston Street onto Woolcock Street. As you would know, the Cosgrove development is accessed via Cosgrove Drive/Ingham Road intersection which is some 2 klms to the north and no traffic is being generated onto Weston Street at all and will not be for quite some years.
It is common that DTM try to defer spending their own money on deficient intersections and wait hoping that private developers will spend their money and clearly the Weston Street Intersection is a good example. The intersection is unsafe and a death trap and its unfortunately that someone has to die before DTM will relook at this problem. Sadly, 1 death may not be enough to prompt then into action to upgrade this intersection at this time. Simply deferring blame to the land owner and developer is a nothing but a copout that we in North Queensland have had to deal with for so long. Can you imagine this situation allowing to happen in South East Queensland.
I am very much saddened by the recent death but it is the responsibility of DTM to provide safe intersections and DTM must front up and fix current black spots and not blame others for their deficiencies.
My condolences to you if the lady passed away was known to you. Please feel free to contact me direct at contact details below.
Regards
1 Peter Tapiolas
