The Issue

Losing my beloved parrot Twinkie due to the inadequacies in emergency exotic veterinary care was a devastating experience. When Twinkie suddenly fell ill, I was faced with the overwhelming challenge of contacting multiple veterinary clinics, all of which informed me that no exotic vets were available. By the time I managed to find a specialist, it was too late. Twinkie was not just a pet she was family, and the feeling of helplessness I felt is something no exotic pet owner should have to experience.

Twinkie was not just a pet she was my comfort, my emotional support, and part of my everyday life. Losing her completely shattered me, and the helplessness I felt while desperately searching for emergency exotic care is something no owner should ever have to experience.

This painful personal experience highlights a crucial issue faced by many exotic pet owners across the UK - the lack of accessible and effective emergency veterinary care specifically for birds and exotic pets. Unlike cats and dogs, exotic pets are often not included in the immediate emergency care framework, leaving their owners in distress during critical moments.

In the UK, more than half a million households are estimated to own exotic pets, which include birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Despite this growing trend, there remains a significant gap in emergency services available for these pets. Owners are often left scrambling during emergencies, calling multiple clinics only to hear that their exotic pet's unique needs cannot be met.

To address this pressing issue, there must be a concerted effort to improve emergency vet services for exotic pets. We need better coverage of emergency exotic vet services across the UK, ensuring that care is available when needed. There must be faster support systems in place for critically ill exotic pets, alongside a clearer and more effective referral process for emergencies. By enhancing these services, exotic pets will receive the urgent care they deserve, akin to the treatment and urgency provided to more mainstream pets like cats and dogs.

We urge the UK government, veterinary associations, and clinics to prioritize the enhancement of emergency veterinary care for exotic pets. It is essential that exotic pets are afforded the same opportunities for survival and care during emergencies as any other family pet. Please sign this petition to bring about change and ensure that no other pet owner experiences the heartbreak of losing a beloved exotic companion due to insufficient emergency care. Your support is invaluable to creating a framework that considers the welfare and urgent needs of all pets.
