Improve diagnostic screening for neurological conditions in young adults

Improve diagnostic screening for neurological conditions in young adults
The Issue
For 20 long years, I lived with the pain and frustration of being misdiagnosed and misunderstood. My journey through the healthcare system was one of persistent obstacles and dismissive attitudes due to my youth. I suffered from Chiari malformation, hypermobility, and axial spondyloarthritis (axial spa), conditions that severely affected my childhood, my ability to lead an active and healthy life, and my mental health. Despite presenting symptoms repeatedly, I was often dismissed with statements like "you're too young for an X-ray," equating my youth with health, leading to delayed diagnosis and unnecessary suffering.
This needs to change. Many young individuals like me are experiencing similar issues, but are facing barriers due to the age biases entrenched in our healthcare system. It's critical that the National Health Service (NHS) removes these biases and offers equitable access to diagnostic tools like MRIs and X-rays. This is especially vital for neurological conditions such as Chiari malformation, which can and should be diagnosed early to prevent prolonged suffering and distress.
The statistics tell us that early diagnosis in neurological conditions drastically improves outcomes. According to numerous health studies, timely and accurate diagnosis can lead to treatment options that prevent progression and improve quality of life. Yet, young people in their twenties often find themselves in limbo, as their symptoms are not taken seriously enough to warrant detailed examination.
We urge the government to implement policy changes that prioritize regular diagnostic screening for neurological conditions in young people, particularly those who present symptoms more than twice. This involves offering access to MRIs and X-rays based on symptoms, not age.
Help us call on the NHS and relevant policymakers to acknowledge and address this pressing issue. Let's work together to create a healthcare system that prioritizes early detection and support for all, regardless of age. Please sign this petition to bring about essential change in the diagnosis and treatment of young individuals affected by neurological conditions.
