The Issue

1.    Uncleanliness: The gym equipment, floors, and locker rooms are at times dirty and not properly sanitized. Specifically, the bathroom floors and showers are frequently unclean, creating an unpleasant and unhygienic environment.

2.    Lack of running water: Members are frequently without access to clean water, and in extreme cases, have been given water from the swimming pool to bathe in buckets. This is unacceptable and poses a significant health risk, potentially leading to the transmission of infections and it has been like this since August 2025.

3.    No hot water: The showers are often cold or not working, making it difficult for members to bathe after a workout especially in winter.

4.    Rude staff: Some members of staff are dismissive and unhelpful when approached with concerns or requests. Customer care needs improvement.

5.    Lack of customer care: The management seems unconcerned about member satisfaction, and there is no effort to address issues.

6.    Irresponsibility: The gym's maintenance and upkeep are neglected, leading to a hazardous and unpleasant environment. The GYM most times doesn’t have grease to apply on the machines. When ground workers are asked why the mats are dirty it is said that they don’t have cleaning materials like soap.

7.    Snack bar not operational: The snack bar is often closed, depriving members of essential amenities and services.

8.    Electrical safety concerns: Electrical extensions are not properly arranged, posing a risk to member safety.

9.    Unavailability of gym instructors: Members often find it difficult to access guidance and support from qualified gym instructors.

10.    Members not allowed to voice out: It is sad that when members speak their concerns, they are threatened that their membership will be cancelled. The GM needs to listen to members' concerns even when it is negative criticism.

11.    Time management: The gym usually opens late and it inconveniences a lot of members as some would want to go to work after the work out, if the gym can be opened by 5am it would be helpful.

To address these issues, we request:

o    Increased cleaning frequency and proper supervision of cleaning staff to ensure the gym is maintained in a clean and hygienic condition. Lockers need to be periodically treated for insects/cockroach control.
o    A reliable and clean water supply, including functional hot water facilities. Consideration of procuring larger water tanks to ensure adequate water supply in the event of Water Board supply challenges.
o    Customer service training for staff to improve member interactions.
o    Reopening and maintenance of the snack bar.
o    Proper arrangement of electrical extensions to ensure safety.
o    Increased number of and availability of gym instructors to provide guidance and support. Consider adding female trainers to ensure that members have a choice.
o    Management should have a conversation with employees individually to have a clear understanding of what is happening at the gym as most members of staff are afraid of the GM so most times complaints never get to him.
o    Listen objectively to negative criticism from members and make possible changes where necessary
o    It would be good if Blantyre would have its own GM and also Lilongwe, as some of these issues can be easily handled.
o    Have a suggestion box
o    Open the gym by 5am.

We, the undersigned members, support this petition and urge the management to take immediate action to address the concerns mentioned above.

This petition is not born out of negativity, but out of necessity. We believe the KUHeS Sports Complex provides a safe and encouraging space for all its members, but this requires continuous active participation from both management and those who utilize its facilities.
