A dear friend of mine is currently incarcerated at USP McCreary, a federal prison in Kentucky. His experiences have revealed a shocking reality - starvation and violence are rampant within the facility's walls. This is not an isolated incident but rather a systemic issue that affects hundreds of inmates, many of whom are from D.C.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons reports that as of 2020, there were over 1,300 inmates housed at USP McCreary (Federal Bureau of Prisons). Each one has their own story to tell about the deplorable conditions they face daily. The food provided is often insufficient and nutritionally inadequate, leading to widespread malnutrition among the inmates.

Furthermore, violence is an all too common occurrence within this facility. The Bureau of Justice Statistics states that in 2015 alone, there were approximately 24 assaults per 1,000 prisoners in federal facilities (Bureau Of Justice Statistics). However anecdotal evidence suggests that this number may be significantly higher at USP McCreary.

We cannot stand by while our fellow citizens suffer such harsh conditions. It's time for us to demand better treatment for these individuals who are paying their debt to society but still deserve basic human rights.
