Living in an area where street lights only glow dim and yellow creates an environment that is both difficult to see and quite eerie, especially after dark. It’s unnerving walking down these poorly lit streets, especially when they’re empty. The street lights in my neighborhood are sparsely placed, one at both ends of a road, leaving an expanse of unnerving darkness in between. As a part of The Peace Warrior Non-Profit's Global Youth Program 2026 cohort, I want to change this so people can feel a greater sense of safety, as this is an often overlooked concern.

This issue doesn’t just affect me, it impacts everyone in our community. Dim lighting can contribute to crime by making potential offenders feel more secure in their actions. Bright lighting, by contrast, can deter crime, providing a safer environment for all. Studies have shown that improved street lighting can reduce crime by about 21%. This is a clear indication that better lighting can make our streets safer.

Moreover, brighter and more strategic street lighting can greatly improve visibility for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike, decreasing the likelihood of accidents. Other communities have taken this step and reported benefits like reduced crime rates and a better sense of community well-being.

We are calling on local council members to prioritize this issue by planning and implementing an initiative to upgrade our street lighting system. This would not only involve installing brighter, energy-efficient LED lights but also ensuring they are placed more frequently along roads so that no point is left in darkness.

We deserve a community that feels safe and welcoming during every hour of the day. Effective lighting is a basic infrastructure need, not just a luxury.
