The Issue

The Truck Training Schools Association of Ontario (TTSAO) and a coalition of various industry stakeholders have initiated a rigorous review of Ontario's Entry-Level Training (ELT) regulations for commercial drivers. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the prevalence of accidents linked to inadequate driver training continues to be a public concern. It is estimated that large truck crashes caused nearly 4,136 deaths in 2018 in North America (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, 2020). The significance of these figures calls for immediate action to modernize and enhance our training standards.

A shift towards safer and more competent commercial driving not only reduces the risk of future accidents, but also strengthens Ontario's reputation in commercial driver education leadership. We're proposing the modernization of the ELT regulations to better equip our workforce with the essential skills for safer roads. Let's make our roads safer and more efficient by ensuring higher quality training for commercial drivers.
