Improve civic sense and reduce pollution in New Delhi

The Issue

Every day, as a resident of New Delhi, I find myself picking up at least 10 kilograms of waste from my surroundings. It's a personal battle against pollution and neglect that I fight daily, and while it might seem like a small effort, I've realized just how powerful collective action can be. Imagine if everyone took responsibility for even just 1 kilogram of waste. The difference would be monumental—not just in the cleanliness of our streets, but in the quality of the air we breathe.

New Delhi is a vibrant city, full of life, culture, and potential. However, it is also plagued by severe pollution and infrastructure problems that make living conditions challenging for its residents. With a population of over 20 million, the environmental impact of uncollected waste and poor civic sense is profound and tends to exacerbate health issues related to air and water quality.

Experts estimate that daily, New Delhi generates about 10,000 tons of garbage, much of which is not properly collected or recycled. This not only adds to landfills but also leads to higher levels of pollution as waste decomposes and produces harmful chemicals. Air pollution in New Delhi has reached critical levels, with World Health Organization reports regularly ranking the city as one of the most polluted in the world. The adverse effects on health—ranging from respiratory issues to decreased life expectancy—are well-documented and demand urgent action.

We need to push for more robust waste management systems and encourage civic responsibility among residents. An effective waste segregation and recycling programme can dramatically decrease the volume of waste that ends up in landfills and instead turn potential waste into resources. Investments in better public infrastructure to manage waste and increase awareness among the populace are key solutions.

The call to action is clear: let us work together to improve the infrastructure and civic attitude in New Delhi. As citizens, adopting simple habits like waste segregation, reducing plastic use, and participating in community clean-up drives can significantly alter the scenario. Support from the government in the form of stricter regulations, improved waste collection services, and public awareness campaigns will further catalyze this much-needed change.

Join me in urging the New Delhi authorities to take decisive action towards enhancing our waste management systems and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship. By signing this petition, you are contributing to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable future for our city. Let's come together to bring about the change we wish to see in our beloved New Delhi. Please sign this petition and make your voice heard.
