My husband, at the age of 66, fell and fractured his hip while in a reablement unit. Since then, he has been unable to walk and is now bedbound for the rest of his life. This experience has highlighted a glaring deficiency in our care facilities' ability to adequately support patients who are compromised by dementia and impaired physical abilities, particularly mobility.

In the UK, over 850,000 people live with dementia, and a significant percentage of these individuals also experience severe physical limitations. Falls are unfortunately common, and the consequences can be devastating, leading to fractures, prolonged bed rest, and a subsequent decline in overall health and quality of life. The reablement units tasked with helping such individuals recover are often ill-equipped, understaffed, or lacking in specialized training to handle complex needs—like my husband's—where dementia and mobility issues converge.

To truly care for our most vulnerable, care facilities must be improved comprehensively. This starts with better training for staff in handling dementia patients, ensuring they understand the nuanced needs that such conditions present. Moreover, there should be an investment in advanced equipment and technology that supports physical rehabilitation—innovative devices that assist with mobility or prevent falls can make a dramatic difference. Furthermore, implementing regular assessments and reviews of care plans tailored to each patient ensures their needs are continually met as they evolve.

These changes not only protect and enhance the quality of life for individuals in care but also provide peace of mind to families who rely on these facilities to keep their loved ones safe and cared for. These are not just statistics or matters for policy discussion; they are realities faced by families every day.
