Improve animal welfare at Dudley Zoo or close it down.
The Issue
I attended Dudley Zoo today, and left extremely concerned about the welfare of the larger animals here. The enclosure the snow leopards are kept in is appalling, they were pacing up and down evidently distressed, panting, with no space to roam around, they looked like zombies. There were Barbary sheep with hooves so overgrown they were struggling to walk, limping around, they needed urgent attention and were clearly in a lot of pain. The sea lions enclosure is far too small for them, it really upset us watching them swim in circles around the same tiny pool. The big cats, and other large animals looked so unhappy and unhealthy, this zoo does not have the facilities to care for such animals. The big animals there (especially the snow leopards) are in desperate need of a much larger enclosure than the one they are currently in. Snow leopards live across a vast area in northern and central Asia's high mountains, including the Himalayan region, Dudley zoo are currently housing these animals in an enclosure no larger than an average sized living room/lounge area. I am so concerned about their welfare and really want to make a change for them, to help them live happier healthier lives. I feel although a lot of work needs to go into this zoo, the way it is now I believe it should be illegal to house larger animals, and I am shocked it has passed government or local authorities inspection checks. In 2018 a snow leopard was shot due to the poor care of these animals after it was allowed to escape one of the enclosures. I would love to help these animals get the right welfare and care they deserve. Dudley Zoo does not have the capacity and correct facilities to fulfil the basic needs of larger animals. Please help me try and make a difference to their lives.
