Improve and Repair Poor Road Conditions on Poling Drive, Giles County, TN
The Issue
I hope this message finds you well! I’m reaching out for your support to help us repair the gravel portion and backend of Poling Drive.
As many of you know, the gravel portion of Poling Drive in Timber Ridge Estates is gradually deteriorating, with large potholes and uneven surfaces that pose a significant hazard to drivers and our vehicles. This only worsens during inclement weather.
I've made several attempts last year to help get the road fixed with no success. This week, I reached out to our commissioners as well as my neighbor, Savannah and pleaded for direction. I've been advised by many to create a petition.
The last homes built on the gravel portion of Poling Drive were mine and my neighbors, Savannah + Billy. We were both told it was our builders responsibility to fix our road since he was the last to build. I personally inquired with our builder, Chase (Hargrove), on two occasions when I moved in and he stated he would not be fixing the road. The last three plots he owned were sold off to a resident outside of Giles County last summer. I don't know if he has anymore property on Poling so I'm not sure who is responsible at this time. The newest owner of the 3 plots has put a halt on his plans to build and could not offer much information on the roads.
Despite our roads status as a private road, its maintenance has been totally overlooked, increasingly affecting the daily lives of our residents and especially our vehicles. There are 14 homes on the gravel area of Poling Drive, multiple with young children who spend plenty of time riding their bicycles and big wheels outside. My daughter included. Aside from the fact the pot holes are so deep and dangerous, the amount of delivery trucks and unnecessary traffic flying through here pose a serious threat to our young children. There is no speed limit sign, no "SLOW" sign, no "DEAD END" sign and the speeds in which the above mentioned vehicles reach are likely to kill someone. I completely understand it is out of everyone's control on who comes in and out, but something must be done for them to slow down, stop the gravel from flying due to speed, and worsening the condition of Poling.
Furthermore, poor road conditions like this can lead to a decrease in property values by up to 15%. The only time our builder has filled the potholes, is when 214 Poling was on the market a couple of years ago and had an Open House. Other than that, one of our residents has graciously taken their own time, money and material on multiple occasions and made an effort to fill the potholes and this should not be the solution.
Yes, Poling is considered private property, but who holds the property owners accountable to follow through with their responsibilities, especially when they have sold off their remaining plots to a resident outside of Giles County. At best, our road needs to be graded, tarred, and chipped with a speed limit sign installed. If we cannot depend on our builders and land owners to keep our road safe and secure to drive on, who do we count on to make this happen? The last home on this road sold for $289,900 and the last three, 1 acre plots, for nearly $50,000 each. Yet, we can't seem to get our road repaired and that's a shame.
It is my hope, properly repairing Poling Drive and installing a Speed Limit sign will create a safter environment, make our neighborhood more drivable, walkable, and make it more safe for our children to play outdoors. It’s something that can make a difference for all of us. I've attached photos below from our road after the rain this morning.
