Improve and Maintain the Southern Area Aquatics and Recreation Complex (SAARC)

Improve and Maintain the Southern Area Aquatics and Recreation Complex (SAARC)
The Issue
WE, the undersigned, are patrons of the SAARC, with many of us patronizing since the SAARC opened in 2020. Unfortunately, in just a few short years, the SAARC pools and locker rooms have gone from beautiful to severely unmaintained. There are several serious issues that WE have complained about multiple times. OUR issues are often unaddressed or temporarily fixed before reverting. We demand that these issues be addressed and processes put in place for continuous maintenance and monitoring. Our issues are as follows:
Swimming pools and spa:
• The bottoms of the pools have stains and mold, particularly around the filters/water pumps. There is also dirt and debris around the pool, resulting from the evident under-cleaning.
• The spa has a ring around it at the water level, and although it is supposedly cleaned once per week, the ring remains.
• Windows around the pool haven't been cleaned in months.
• The kids' water buckets are discolored, and some don't fill/work.
• Water temperatures are inconsistent. Often well below 80 degrees.
• Pool and spa water is tested inconsistently; sometimes it is tested a couple of times in a two hour span and then other times it is not tested at all. This varies depending on the lead lifeguard.
• Lighting around the pools are often in disrepair, hanging from one wire instead of the two needed. In general repairs of ANY type take much longer than reasonable. This can often be a safety hazard.
• There is broken and insufficient equipment for aquatics classes. The aquatic bikes are broken and instructors have to provide some equipment at their own expense. Equipment needed for classes should be maintained and purchased by the SAARC.
Lifeguards and staff:
• Lifeguards, when on duty, seem disinterested at best. Many of us don't feel they are attentive enough to avert an emergency.
• Pool managers stay in their office and only offer excuses or dishonest responses to questions and complaints.
Locker room and shower stalls:
• The only thing done regularly is the floor is mopped and trash is emptied. And although the floors may be mopped, it is NOT often enough. Throughout the day, the floors are filthy.
• Shower stalls have mold and mildew on the walls, and shower heads have a buildup. The walls need to be scrubbed to eliminate the mold and mildew, and shower heads need to be cleaned and descaled OFTEN.
• Throughout the day, shower stall walls and floors often have globs of hair, soap scum and debris. A once a day cleaning routine is insufficient for the number of people who use the showers and locker rooms. Stalls have the same uncleaned debris for days, so are the stalls even cleaned daily??
• Until recently, the shower curtains were not wide enough; they didn't match and are not replaced regularly. Unbelievably, it has taken several months to have the correct size shower curtains installed.
• The drains smell from time to time so it is obvious they are not cleaned regularly.
• The cabanas, used by handicap individuals, have no air conditioning. In addition, one of the three cabanas has been closed for weeks with no indication for when it will be reopened.
• Lockers are dirty, contain trash and some are broken. They need repairs and must be cleaned and sanitized regularly.
Again, we demand that all of these issues be addressed and a regular cleaning and maintenance schedule instituted and upheld. This must not be a quick fix but a permanent schedule of cleaning and maintenance with necessary oversight. If our concerns are not finally and definitively addressed, we intended to have these issues brought to the attention of the county executive, the Governor and local media outlets. Our complaints and concerns can no longer go unaddressed or placated with temporary fixes.
