Improve and Highlight the Condition of Newtown Creek

Improve and Highlight the Condition of Newtown Creek
The Issue
Living my entire life near Newtown Creek, I've been a witness to its significant impact on our local area. Newtown Creek, a 3.5-mile-long estuary that forms part of the border between the boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, in New York City, is unfortunately one of the United States’ most polluted water bodies. Due to years of neglect and industrial activity, the creek’s waters are heavily contaminated with a wide range of pollutants which cause immense harm to local ecosystems.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared Newtown Creek a Superfund site in 2010, highlighting its dire state (source: EPA). Despite this, remediation efforts haven't matched the urgency of the situation. The creek’s contamination continues to have severe consequences for local biodiversity, water quality, and public health.
The moment has come to insist on a cleaner, safer Newtown Creek. We're not just advocating for an environmental cause, but for the well-being of our community, the protectors of local wildlife, and the next generations who deserve to inherit a healthier, safer environment.
The impact of Newtown Creek's pollution is not something I've simply read about - it's something I've lived. Let’s safeguard our health and the vitality of our community. Please sign this petition to expedite clean-up efforts and raise awareness about the state of Newtown Creek.
