Improve adult mental health facilities and increase bed availability

The Issue

My daughter is 26 and is battling severe mental illness. Her journey through this struggle has been marked by several suicide attempts, but none as harrowing as the most recent incidents. Last Friday, in a moment of desperation, she overdosed. Despite her urgent pleas for help, she was discharged from the hospital by Sunday evening, leaving her vulnerable once more. By Monday, her mental state had deteriorated to the point where she consumed over 66 tablets in another attempt to end her life. Miraculously, her survival was favored by her larger physique, a grim stroke of fortune. Nevertheless, she again found herself without the care she so desperately needs, being told there are simply no available beds. She continues to voice her intent to harm herself unless she receives immediate support, begging for someone to save her life.

This nightmare is a painful reality for many families due to the shocking lack of resources in our mental health system. This is not just my daughter's fight; it’s a tragically common experience for countless individuals and families yearning for support. Statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness reveal that one in five adults in the United States experiences mental health issues each year, with many like my daughter finding themselves in dire situations unable to access the help they need.

The mental healthcare crisis is exacerbated by the chronic shortage of mental health beds and facilities across the country. According to the Treatment Advocacy Center, the number of state hospital beds has decreased by 95% since the 1950s, leaving our mental health system vastly underprepared for the current demand. This dire shortage directly contributes to the tragic increase in suicides, which have become the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.

It is essential for our leaders and policymakers to prioritize mental health by increasing funding for mental health services and expanding the capacity of mental health facilities. Immediate steps must include the creation of more beds and resources, hiring more mental healthcare professionals, and ensuring no individual is left without the urgent care they need.

This is a call to action for our state and national leaders to recognize and act upon this mental health crisis. By signing this petition, we urge decision-makers to invest in our mental healthcare infrastructure so that no individual is denied the life-saving treatment they so urgently need. Join us in demanding better for our loved ones, for all of us. Please sign this petition to help save lives.
