The Issue

In India, only 0.5 percent of the population receive legal aid despite 80% of the population being eligible and in need for it as per this Times of India article.

It is estimated that there is only 1 lawyer for every 752 individuals in India, whereas this ratio is 1:258 in the UK - raising concern over inadequate legal counsel for Indians.

Why should you care?

Scarcity of quality legal counsel often exacerbates:

  1. Violence arising from Land disputes  - 59% of conflict-induced manslaughter committed in Bihar were due to disagreement on the ownership and inheritance of land.
  2. Challenges in obtaining Justice - Approximately 77% of the prison population in India are undertrials - indicating a need for efficient and accurate legal counsel.
  3. Economic consequences - Prolonged litigation consumes more time and resources, resulting in a less efficient economics for both the government and the litigants.

Let’s advocate for greater spending on access to legal counsel for individuals of all ethnicities, ages and socio-economic backgrounds.
Let’s advocate for justice.
Let’s advocate for equality.
