Improve Access to IVF Treatments for Egg Donors in Northern Ireland

The Issue

I am currently in the process of donating eggs for a loved one. This is a deeply personal and emotional journey, but it has brought to light an issue that affects women across Northern Ireland, many of whom will be completely unaware! Under current regulations, every female is entitled to one round of IVF funding/treatment. However, if a woman volunteers to donate her eggs, this counts towards her round of funding - even though she will have no child or personal gain at the end.

This policy not only restricts generous donors like myself from accessing IVF treatment in the future if needed but also discourages potential donors from making this life-changing decision. It's important to note that according to Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), 1 in 7 couples may have difficulty conceiving naturally - highlighting the importance of egg donation and assisted reproductive treatments.

We believe that egg donation should not count towards a woman's single round of funded IVF treatment. Women who are willing to help others start families should not be penalised by potentially losing their own chance at motherhood.

We call on health authorities and policymakers in Northern Ireland to revise these regulations and improve access to IVF treatments for egg donors without compromising their own fertility rights. Please sign this petition today and help us bring about this necessary change.
