Improve access to healthcare for Manitobans

Improve access to healthcare for Manitobans
The Issue
As residents with firsthand experience, we've all witnessed the hurdles in accessing timely healthcare across Manitoba. Our healthcare system needs a transformation, particularly in acknowledging the vital role nurse practitioners can play in alleviating these challenges. Manitoba's healthcare funding models are outdated, limiting the capability of nurse practitioners to provide essential services that are critical for the well-being of our communities.
In the past year alone, countless Manitobans have faced extended wait times, leading to stress, worsened health outcomes, and a general feeling of helplessness. Notably, 150,000 - 180,000 (11-15%) of Manitobans do not have a regular primary care provider. This lack of access to primary care leads to hospital wait times that are among the highest in Canada. Our capable nurse practitioners are ready to step in and provide primary care but are restrained by bureaucratic and financial barriers.
Around the world, nurse practitioners have proven to improve healthcare accessibility and quality. By modernizing our healthcare funding models, Manitoba could follow suit, reducing wait times significantly and expanding access to those in need. Studies from other provinces and countries show that when nurse practitioners are fully integrated into healthcare systems, patient satisfaction increases, and healthcare systems become more efficient and less costly.
We urge the Government of Manitoba to conduct a thorough review and modernization of its healthcare funding models. It’s time to empower nurse practitioners to continue working at the top of their scope, and have better control over where they practice, ensuring Manitobans receive timely, efficient, and effective healthcare services.
Please sign this petition to call on the Manitoba government to take necessary actions towards enhancing healthcare access across our province. Together, we can create a healthcare system where everyone has timely access to the care they deserve.
