Improve access to Collooney Train Station
The Issue
As residents of Collooney, we understand firsthand the challenges that our community faces due to poor access to the Collooney Train Station. The station, an integral part of our daily commute and essential for connectivity, remains highly inaccessible for many of us living in the village. For many residents, reaching the train station currently requires a nearly 2 km zig-zag journey. However, this distance could be halved with a straightforward solution: the construction of a pedestrian bridge across the Owenmore River from Lower Main Street.
A pedestrian bridge would not only drastically cut down travel times for those on foot, it would also enhance safety, by preventing the need to navigate busy roads with limited pedestrian pathways. This bridge would serve as a direct, safe path for pedestrians, making it easier to utilize public transport, and therefore substantially reducing the reliance on cars. This change aligns with Ireland's environmental goals, encouraging the use of sustainable modes of transport while providing a more accessible route for the elderly and individuals with disabilities.
The lack of adequate access to infrastructure impacts the social and economic potential of Collooney. With better access, the village could see a boost in local businesses, as it would become easier for visitors and locals alike to come and go. Improved access to transportation facilities can increase property values and attract investment to our community.
