In the state of Florida, every year, thousands of families face the daunting and life-changing challenge of supporting a loved one who has suffered a stroke. March 11, 2025, stands as a poignant reminder of this reality for me, as it was the day my wife, Tara, suffered a catastrophic stroke. In mere hours, our lives were profoundly altered. Tara lost her speech and the use of her right side. Overnight, I transitioned from a full-time professional to a full-time caregiver, dedicating my life to her recovery.

This personal journey mirrors the experiences of countless families across Florida. Stroke survivors and their caregivers encounter numerous obstacles as they navigate the path to recovery. These challenges are not just emotional but also financially crippling, given the costly nature of rehabilitation and the insufficient support systems in place.

Florida has one of the highest incidences of stroke in the United States. According to the American Stroke Association, approximately 18% of those who suffer a stroke each year are Floridians, many of whom are left with significant disabilities. Yet, the support system for stroke survivors and their caregivers in Florida is grossly inadequate compared to the overwhelming need.

Evidence shows that comprehensive and timely care significantly improves the outcomes for stroke survivors, reducing not only the long-term disability but also the financial strain on both families and the state healthcare system. However, access to critical post-stroke care and rehabilitation services remains limited, often dictated by geography, insurance coverage, and the availability of resources in our communities.

We urge the Florida Legislature and the Governor of Florida to take immediate and decisive action to rectify these shortcomings. By increasing state funding for stroke rehabilitation programs, expanding Medicaid coverage for stroke-related services, and investing in caregiver support initiatives, Florida can become a leader in stroke care and support.

Moreover, implementing statewide access to telehealth services can provide much-needed flexibility and accessibility for rural and underserved communities. This strategic investment not only supports the health of stroke survivors but also strengthens their families who tirelessly strive to provide care and support.
