Improve 0418 bus service for the vulnerable in Northumberland
The Issue
My mam is a resident in Howick and a cherished member of the community, who faces significant challenges due to her health conditions. As a 76-year-old woman with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and high blood pressure, the reliable and accessible transportation is essential for her well-being. Since moving back in with her last November from a supported living environment, my role has been to assist with daily tasks around the house.
The 0418 bus service is a crucial link for her & many other residents, providing a necessary means for accessing essential services such as healthcare, grocery shopping, and social activities that contribute to a better quality of life. Without a reliable bus service, her independence and ability to participate in the community are hampered.
Currently, the 0418 bus timetable does not effectively meet the needs of our community's most vulnerable members. Irregular schedules and limited availability make it difficult for those with mobility issues, like my mam to plan medical appointments or other essential outings without undue stress or difficulty.
According to a recent study by the Age UK, reliable transportation is a key factor in improving the quality of life for elderly individuals, particularly in rural areas. Current services fall short of meeting the standards needed to support those who rely on public transport for these critical aspects of life.
To address this pressing issue, we propose a revision of the 0418 bus timetable to offer more frequent and consistent service throughout the day. This change will ensure that residents have access to reliable transportation options, thereby enhancing their independence and participation in the community.
We call upon the Northumberland County Council and local transport authorities to reevaluate the 0418 bus service schedule and take the necessary steps to accommodate the needs of residents like my mam. By making these improvements, we can foster a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
