Impose Term Limits for Supreme Court Justices

Impose Term Limits for Supreme Court Justices
The Issue
The Supreme Court plays an immensely critical role in our society. As the final arbiter of constitutional law, its decisions affect countless lives, making the longevity, and thus influence, of its justices a topic of importance. Current statutes allow Supreme Court justices to serve lifetime appointments, which can lead to decades-long tenures. For instance, as per the Congressional Research Service, the average tenure of a Supreme Court justice is nearly 17 years. Justice William O. Douglas holds the record for the longest-serving justice with a tenure spanning over 36 years. This system of lifetime appointments can arguably lead to stagnation, hinder the injection of fresh perspectives, and vest a disproportionate amount of power in the hands of a few individuals over extended periods. The proposed solution is to institute fixed terms of 10 to 15 years for Supreme Court justices. This modification would not only ensure systematic rotation of justices — bringing in new ideas — but also make the Court more responsive to the changing values of public opinion. Clearly, the importance of this issue cannot be overstated. Sign this petition and join us in advocating for a much-needed reform in our judiciary.
