The Issue

This issue is more than just a matter of public concern—it's deeply personal. We are witnesses to a disturbing crisis here in South Carolina: a countless number of animals, specifically dogs and cats, being abused and abandoned. People are moving and leaving their pets behind. Dogs and cats, our beloved companions, are dumped along the roadside nearly daily statewide. Dogs are chained or otherwise confined without food and water in all types of weather, including excessive heat and cold.

As a community, we need to speak out against this recurring tragedy. Animal cruelty is not just morally repugnant; it is now recognized as a type of criminal behavior linked to antisocial and aggressive behavior in humans. A study detailing seven US cities found that animal abuse was a predictor of domestic violence and child abuse [Source: American Humane].

Moreover, in South Carolina alone, despite the existing animal cruelty laws, reported cases of animal mistreatment remain distressingly high, with over 10,000 cases in the past year [Source: South Carolina Department of Animal Care].

We demand our lawmakers to impose stricter laws and penalties on animal abuse and abandonment in our state.  At minimum abusers should be fined no less than $1000.00 and spend at least 6 months in jail.  We believe that these scraps of life deserve more than such callous disregard. Let's turn the tide on animal abuse and abandonment in South Carolina and be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves. Please sign this petition, contribute to making South Carolina a safer place for our pets, and fuel a broader change nationwide.
