Impose Rental Caps in Saskatchewan to Address Housing Affordability Crisis

The Issue

My family has been living in our home for 7 years. Suddenly, due to a significant hike in bank interest rates, our landlord states that they can no longer afford the property. Now, my family, like many others in the province, is struggling to find affordable housing and is confronted with the prospect of paying exorbitant prices or committing to unreasonably long leases.

Saskatchewan is currently witnessing a frightening increase in the living costs and inflation. What's even more alarming is the wages not keeping up with this rise, putting the average citizen in a vulnerable position. This has resulted in a spike in homelessness rates within the province, affecting everyone, from families like mine, to elderly seniors, and individuals.

Setting rental caps can provide families in Saskatchewan a renewed hope to secure housing without fear. This practice can be seen in many parts of Canada and across the world as an effective measure to keep housing affordable. Such policies put a limit on the amount a landlord can increase rent, providing a crucial safety net for tenants.

I call upon the Saskatchewan Government to introduce a policy of rental caps in the province. We have the right to live in dignity, free from the fear of unaffordable increases in rent. It is crucial to instill this change now before more families are pushed out of their homes, and more individuals are thrust into homelessness.
