Impose Regulations on TikTok's Gifting Feature to Prevent Financial Exploitation

The Issue

This petition is born out of a personal tragedy. A loved one was driven to the edge, eventually taking their own life due to the crushing debt they incurred from excessive gifting on TikTok. This feature, while intended for fun and engagement, has become a tool for financial exploitation, especially among those who feel isolated and are seeking companionship.

TikTok's live gifting feature allows users to purchase virtual gifts with real money and send them to content creators during live streams. Unfortunately, this system has led some users into serious financial trouble as they strive to feel part of a community or team.

It is estimated that in 2020 alone, TikTok made over $1 billion from these in-app purchases (source: Sensor Tower). While the platform profits immensely, vulnerable individuals are getting themselves into debt. The lack of regulations around this feature makes it easy for people - often those who can least afford it - to spend excessively.

We call upon our government officials not just merely observe but take decisive action against such practices that prey upon loneliness and vulnerability. We demand stricter regulations on TikTok's gifting feature including spending limits and better user education about potential financial risks.

Please sign this petition if you believe in safeguarding mental health and preventing financial exploitation on social media platforms like TikTok.
